Front: Time was growing short for the Nickel Plate in the spring of 1964, but standards of service, speed and safety were never compromised. Bob Albert captured a meet at Argos featuring trains headed by the Nickel Plate's newest power. There was a time for the brakeman, positioned for a "roll-by" inspection, to give a friendly wave - another Nickel Plate tradition.

Back: The Nickel Plate continued to invest in equipment upgrades and new cars right up until it disappeared into the Norfolk & Western, including purchases of the most up-to-date car types. Eighteen 70-ton covered hoppers, part of an order of 65 delivered by Pullman-Standard in 1962, typify this constant improvement as they pose for a portrait before beginning more prosaic chores.
