Front: Frankfort, always a key location on the Clover Leaf, assumed new importance after 1933 as the classification point for the NKP's St.Louis and Peoria traffic. The Nickel Plate became a major influence in Frankfort as the city's largest employer. The coal pocket, which remains to this day, and RS3 535, which came to work in 1954, typify the Nickel Plate's presence. Photo: NKPHTS Collection
Back: Nickel Plate Road steam has been dormant since the previous July. In May 1959, five switchers were recalled to service as the NKP experienced a traffic increase. U-3b 212 takes a drink before starting her chores on June 20, 1959. The 212, Lima-built in 1924, has exactly four weeks of service left before she rings down the final curtain on NKP steam.
