Convention

The 2025 Nickel Plate Road Historical & Technical Society Convention will be held in Scranton, Pennsylvania, home of Steamtown National Historic Site. Scheduled for September 4-6th, our venue and lodgings will be at the historic Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel. Steamtown is home to a number of Nickel Plate Road locomotives. These include P-Class 4-6-0 No. 44, S-2 Class 2-8-4 No. 759, and GP-9 No. 514. Additionally, we are pleased to announce that thanks to the cooperation of Steamtown and Genesee Valley Transportation DL Alco PA No. 190 and Nickel Plate Road 10-6 sleeper City of Lima will be in attendance. We hope to see you in Scranton!

Friday, September 5th

  • Member Registration 8 am - Noon

  • Free Time 8 am - 2 pm 

    • Explore Steamtown National Historic Site, the Electric City Trolley Museum and/or the nearby Lackawanna Mine Tour & Museum. 

  • Steamtown Yard Train Ride with Nickel Plate Road 514 - 2:30 pm

  • Photoshoot - 3:30 pm

    • Featuring NKP 514, 759, DL 190, the City of Lima and other Steamtown equipment. 

Saturday, September 6th

  • Membership Meeting 9 - 10 am

  • Free Time 10 am - 1 pm

    • Explore Steamtown National Historic Site and/or Electric City Trolley Museum with a trolley ride through a tunnel to a baseball park and back.

  • Presentations 1 - 5 pm

    • NKP 151 the City of Chicago by David Vaughn 1 - 2 pm

    • Wizard with a Camera - Railroad Photography by Adam Matthews 2:30 - 4 pm 

    • Building the Future - 3D Modeling the NKP by Daniel Raible 4 - 5 pm

  • Reception 5:30 - 6:30 pm

Cab Ride Opportunity

Thanks to the generosity of Steamtown National Historic Site, two lucky registered attendees will have the opportunity to ride in the cab of Baldwin Locomotive Works 0-6-0 No. 26, which of course once masqueraded as Nickel Plate Road No. 17, or in the cab of Nickel Plate Road GP-9 No. 514. To enter all you need to do is register for the Convention. If you are already registered then you are automatically in the running.

Winners will be announced on the morning of Friday, September 5th. Cab Ride instructions and times will be provided.

Please note that locomotive cabs are not ADA accessible.
